In engineering colleges from Chennai to Tirunelveli, the result-day group chat fills with one question: how much did my CGPA move? Anna University CGPA calculation is credit-weighted, which means a 4-credit theory paper and a 1.5-credit lab affect it very differently, and an arrear changes the picture until it is cleared. This guide works through the system with examples.
Grade points under Regulation 2021
| Grade | Points |
|---|---|
| O | 10 |
| A+ | 9 |
| A | 8 |
| B+ | 7 |
| B | 6 |
| C | 5 |
| U / RA | 0 |
Students under Regulation 2013 see S, A, B, C, D, E grades instead, with the same 10-to-5 point values.
Why credits matter more than one high grade
GPA = Σ(credits × grade points) ÷ Σ credits (one semester) CGPA = Σ(credits × grade points) ÷ Σ credits (all semesters cleared)
Take a semester with subjects of 4, 4, 3, 3, 2 and 1.5 credits. Moving one 4-credit subject from A (8) to A+ (9) adds 4 credit points; moving the 1.5-credit lab from A to A+ adds only 1.5. Over 17.5 credits, the first raises GPA by about 0.23 and the second by about 0.09. Revision time should follow the credits.

How an arrear affects GPA and CGPA
A subject graded U (or RA) carries no grade points and is left out of the GPA and CGPA calculation until it is cleared, under Anna University's regulations. That has two effects students often miss:
- The semester GPA can look fine because the failed subject's credits aren't in the denominator, but the degree isn't complete until the arrear is cleared.
- When it is cleared, the new grade and its credits enter the CGPA, which may then rise or fall slightly depending on the grade earned.
Does clearing an arrear later lower my class?
Classification (such as First Class with Distinction) usually depends on CGPA and on completing the programme within the time limits and conditions in the regulation, including how many attempts were needed. The regulation document for your batch has the exact conditions.
Anna University CGPA calculation: a worked update
A student has a CGPA of 8.10 over 80 credits after four semesters and scores a GPA of 8.60 over 22 credits in semester five.
Credit points so far = 8.10 × 80 = 648 New semester = 8.60 × 22 = 189.2 New CGPA = (648 + 189.2) ÷ (80 + 22) = 8.21
A strong semester moves the CGPA only a little at this stage, which is why the early semesters matter so much.
CGPA to percentage
Anna University's rule is percentage = CGPA × 10, so 8.21 CGPA is 82.1%. Use this figure on placement and higher-study forms unless the form specifies another rule.
The Anna University GPA calculator loads R2021, R2017 and R2013 grade scales, combines a new semester with the CGPA so far, and shows the percentage.
Frequently asked questions
How is Anna University CGPA calculated?
CGPA = Σ(credits × grade points) ÷ Σ credits over all cleared subjects of all semesters.
What are the grade points in Anna University R2021?
O 10, A+ 9, A 8, B+ 7, B 6, C 5, and U/RA 0.
Does an arrear reduce my CGPA?
A U/RA subject is left out until it is cleared; when cleared, its grade and credits are added, which can shift the CGPA slightly.
How do I convert Anna University CGPA to percentage?
Multiply by 10: 8.2 CGPA is 82%.
Do lab subjects affect CGPA?
Yes, in proportion to their credits, usually less than 4-credit theory subjects.
