Answer Key Calculator: Check Your Score with Negative Marking

This answer key calculator turns the number of correct and wrong answers into an exact score using each exam's marking scheme: JEE Main and NEET (+4 / −1), SSC CGL (+2 / −0.5), RRB Group D (+1 / −⅓), DSSSB (+1 / −0.25) and CTET, or any custom scheme. It also shows accuracy and how many marks negative marking cost.

Should I attempt a question I'm unsure about?

With +4/−1 marking, a guess between two options is worth taking on average (expected value +1.5); a blind guess among four is roughly neutral (+0.25). With −1/3 on a +1 question (Group D), a blind guess among four averages zero.

How to use the answer key calculator

  1. Download the official provisional answer key and your response sheet from the exam website once released.
  2. Count the correct and wrong answers by comparing the two.
  3. Choose the exam in the calculator (or Custom) and enter the counts.
  4. Read the score, percentage, accuracy and marks lost to negative marking.

Coaching teachers in Kota, Patna and Delhi's Mukherjee Nagar do exactly this for students the evening an answer key drops, because the score decides whether to file an objection against a key answer before the deadline.

Answer key calculator by PDF or URL

Some tools read an answer-key PDF or response-sheet URL automatically. This calculator deliberately asks only for counts: no login, no uploading the response sheet, and no personal data leaves the phone. Counting takes a few minutes and is error-free if the answers are ticked off question by question.

Exam-specific tips

  • JEE Main: score out of 300; NTA converts it to a percentile per session. Use the JEE Mains score calculator for percentile-to-rank.
  • NEET UG: dropped or bonus questions after the final key give marks to everyone who attempted them; re-check after the final key.
  • SSC and Group D: normalisation across shifts can move the final marks a little above or below the raw score.
  • DSSSB: the number of questions differs by post; use Custom if the preset doesn't match.
