CAT Percentile Calculator: Score, Sections and Rank

This CAT percentile calculator works out the raw CAT score section by section, VARC, DILR and QA, from correct and wrong MCQ answers and correct TITA answers, using the marking scheme (+3 correct, −1 wrong MCQ, no negative marking for TITA). It then estimates a rank from a percentile, the number that decides IIM shortlists.

CAT score and percentile formula explained

Section score = 3 × MCQ correct − 1 × MCQ wrong + 3 × TITA correct
CAT score = VARC + DILR + QA
Rank estimate = (100 − percentile) ÷ 100 × candidates

TITA (type-in-the-answer) questions have no options and no negative marking, so mentors in Delhi, Pune and Bengaluru always tell aspirants to attempt every TITA question they have time for. The raw score is then scaled across slots to adjust for difficulty, and the scaled score is converted to percentiles, overall and section-wise.

Why can't marks be turned into an exact percentile?

Because the percentile depends on how everyone else scored in that year's exam after scaling. Previous years' score-vs-percentile tables are only a rough guide, and they shift with difficulty.

IIM calls: what percentile is needed?

IIMs shortlist using overall and sectional percentile cut-offs, plus academic scores, work experience and diversity factors. The older IIMs (Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta) have historically needed overall percentiles in the high 90s for general-category candidates, while sectional cut-offs ensure no section is ignored. Each IIM publishes its own admission policy every year, which is the only reliable source.

A balanced profile matters: a 99 percentile with one weak section can miss a call that a 97 with all sections above the sectional cut-off receives.

CAT percentile calculator from the response sheet

  1. Download the response sheet and provisional answer key when the IIM conducting CAT releases them.
  2. Count, for each section, correct MCQs, wrong MCQs and correct TITAs.
  3. Enter them in the calculator to get section scores and the total.
  4. Enter an expected percentile and the number of test-takers to estimate the rank.

The number of questions per section has changed across years, so this calculator asks for counts rather than assuming a fixed paper size, keeping it valid for each new CAT.

FAQ

CAT Percentile Calculator: questions people ask

How is CAT score calculated?

+3 for each correct answer, −1 for each wrong MCQ, and no negative marking for TITA questions. Section scores add up to the total, which is then scaled.

How does the CAT percentile calculator work from the response sheet?

Count correct and wrong MCQs and correct TITAs per section from the response sheet and answer key, then enter them to get the raw score.

What CAT percentile is needed for IIM Ahmedabad?

IIM Ahmedabad publishes its cut-offs each year; historically, general-category calls have needed overall percentiles in the high 90s along with sectional cut-offs.

What percentile is needed for top IIMs?

Usually 98–99+ overall for general-category candidates at the oldest IIMs, with sectional cut-offs; newer IIMs shortlist at lower percentiles.

What is a TITA question in CAT?

A type-in-the-answer question without options. It carries +3 for a correct answer and no negative marking.
