What Ashtakavarga measures
Ashtakavarga is Jyotish's own scoring system. *Ashta* means eight: the seven planets from Sun to Saturn plus the Lagna act as eight reference points. From each of them, a planet receives a bindu (benefic point) in certain houses and none in others. Old astrologers in Tamil Nadu and Kerala still draw these tables on paper, but the counting is long and one slip spoils everything, which is exactly what a calculator is for.

These totals never change from chart to chart; only their distribution across the houses does. The calculator checks its own work against them every time.
Bhinna Ashtakavarga vs Sarvashtakavarga
- Bhinna Ashtakavarga (BAV): one row per planet, 0–8 bindus per house. It shows how comfortable *that* planet feels in each sign, which matters most for its transits.
- Sarvashtakavarga (SAV): the seven BAV rows added together. It shows the overall strength of each house and the life areas it stands for.
Why is the Lagna counted but not Rahu and Ketu?
Parashara's scheme uses eight reference points: the seven visible planets and the ascendant. Rahu and Ketu are shadow points and have no Ashtakavarga of their own in the classical method.
How to read an Ashtakavarga chart
With 337 points spread over 12 houses, the average is about 28 per house. Teachers use simple bands:

- Find the strongest and weakest houses: the calculator marks them at the top of the result.
- Compare houses that pair up: traditionally the 11th (gains) should have more points than the 12th (expenses), and the 10th (career) more than the 9th.
- Use BAV for transits: when Saturn or Jupiter moves through a sign, its own BAV score there (4 or more is helpful) says how that transit is likely to feel.
What do 40 points in Ashtakavarga mean?
Forty or more points in one house is rare and very strong. It is a house the chart clearly favours. 40 points in Ashtakavarga in the 11th house is the version people ask about most, because the 11th is the house of income, gains and fulfilled wishes; astrologers read it as steady earning power and helpful networks. High Ashtakavarga points in the 11th house (anything above 32) are generally welcomed, especially when the 12th house has fewer points than the 11th.
A high score supports a house; it doesn't override the rest of the chart. A strong 11th with a weak 2nd, for example, can mean good income that is hard to hold on to.
Venus Ashtakavarga and relationships
Venus Ashtakavarga is the Bhinna row for Venus. Astrologers look at how many bindus Venus has in the 7th house and in the sign it occupies: 5 or more suggests Venus is comfortable, which is read as warmth in relationships, comforts and artistic taste. Its row also helps time events: Venus transits through high-bindu signs tend to be pleasant periods for marriage and purchases.
Navamsa Ashtakavarga
Some practitioners also apply Ashtakavarga to the Navamsa (D-9) chart. The classical method in Parashara is built on the birth (rashi) chart, and that is what this calculator uses. If a Navamsa Ashtakavarga is needed, the same bindu tables are applied to Navamsa positions instead of rashi positions.
How to use the Ashtakavarga calculator
