Percentage to CGPA Calculator: Convert Both Ways
This percentage to CGPA calculator converts marks percentage into CGPA, and CGPA back into percentage, with the rule a student actually needs: CBSE's 9.5 rule, the out of 10 (× 10) rule used by Anna University and many others, VTU's formula, an out of 4 scale, or a custom formula from any university's regulations.

Percentage to CGPA formula, by scale
Counsellors in Delhi and Chennai hear this question every admission season, and the honest answer is always “which board?”. The conversion belongs to the board or university, not to CGPA itself:
| Scale | Percentage → CGPA | CGPA → Percentage |
|---|---|---|
| CBSE | % ÷ 9.5 | CGPA × 9.5 |
| Out of 10 (× 10 rule) | % ÷ 10 | CGPA × 10 |
| VTU | % ÷ 10 + 0.75 | (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 |
| Out of 4 (simple linear) | % ÷ 25 | CGPA × 25 |
Percentage to CGPA calculator for CBSE
CBSE introduced the 9.5 factor because the average percentage of students scoring in the top grade band (A1) across subjects came close to 95. So 70 percent in CGPA on the CBSE scale is 70 ÷ 9.5 = 7.37, and 10 CGPA in percentage is 10 × 9.5 = 95%.
Why is 10 CGPA not 100%?
On the CBSE scale, 10 CGPA means every subject was in the top grade band, whose average was about 95%. That is why 10 CGPA converts to 95%, not 100%.
Percentage to CGPA out of 10
Many universities, including Anna University and SRM, simply multiply CGPA by 10. Under that rule 75% is 7.5 CGPA and 8.2 CGPA is 82%. The percentage to CGPA calculator for engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu and many other states uses this rule.
Percentage to CGPA out of 4
Universities in the US, and many in Pakistan, report CGPA on a 4-point scale. A simple linear conversion is % ÷ 25 (so 80% = 3.2), but most universities that use the 4-point scale convert through a grade table instead, and foreign admissions offices often use credential-evaluation services such as WES. Use the out-of-4 option as a rough guide, and the university's own table for applications.
SPPU and other universities
Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), Mumbai University and several others publish their own CGPA-to-percentage formulas, which have changed between patterns (2015, 2019 and newer). Choose Custom in the calculator and enter the multiplier and the number to subtract exactly as given in the university's notification.
When a form asks for percentage, write which rule was used (for example “CGPA 8.4 × 9.5 = 79.8% as per CBSE”). It avoids confusion during document verification.
