JEE Main Percentile Explained: Marks, Shifts and Your Rank

By Umer SattarUpdated 23 Oct 20262 min read

Every January and April, Kota hostels fill with the same argument: “I got more marks than him, so why is my percentile lower?” The JEE Main percentile is not a percentage of marks. It is a position within the shift a student wrote, which is why it confuses so many families. Here is how NTA's method works and what it means for the rank.

JEE Main percentile is a position, not a percentage

Percentile = 100 × (candidates in your shift with score ≤ yours) ÷ (total candidates in your shift)

A 99 percentile means 99% of candidates in that shift scored the same as or less than you. It says nothing directly about marks out of 300. The topper of every shift gets 100 percentile, whatever their marks.

Is percentile the same as percentage?

No. Percentage is your marks ÷ 300 × 100. Percentile compares you with everyone in your shift. 150/300 is 50%, but in a tough shift it could be above 97 percentile.

Why the same marks give different percentiles

JEE Main runs in many shifts with different papers. A tough shift pulls everyone's marks down, so 160 marks might put a student ahead of more people there than in an easy shift. Calculating percentiles within each shift is NTA's way of normalising for difficulty: each shift is ranked on its own scale, and then the percentiles are merged.

That is why marks-vs-percentile tables shared on social media are only rough: they mix shifts of different difficulty.

Two sessions: the better one counts

Candidates can appear in both sessions. For the final ranking, NTA uses the better of the two percentiles. A student who improves in session 2 gets the higher figure; one who does worse keeps the session 1 percentile.

From percentile to rank

Approximate rank = (100 − percentile) ÷ 100 × total candidates
Approximate All India Rank for 13 lakh candidates
PercentileApprox. rank
99.9≈ 1,300
99.5≈ 6,500
99≈ 13,000
98≈ 26,000
95≈ 65,000
90≈ 1,30,000

Actual ranks differ a little because of ties and category-wise lists, but this formula gets close. NTA publishes the final All India Rank with the session 2 result.

JEE Advanced and counselling

  • JEE Advanced: the top 2,50,000 candidates (across categories, with category shares) qualify; NTA announces the category-wise qualifying percentile each year.
  • JoSAA counselling for NITs, IIITs and GFTIs uses the JEE Main rank (and category and home-state quotas). Previous years' opening and closing ranks are published on the JoSAA portal.

Work out the raw score first from the official answer key; the JEE Mains score calculator does the +4/−1 arithmetic per subject and turns any percentile into an estimated rank for the candidate count you enter.

Frequently asked questions

How is JEE Main percentile calculated?

Percentile = 100 × candidates in your shift scoring the same or less ÷ total candidates in your shift.

Why are percentiles different for the same marks?

Each shift has a different paper difficulty, and percentiles are calculated within each shift.

Which percentile counts if I write both sessions?

The better of the two.

How do I convert JEE Main percentile to rank?

Rank ≈ (100 − percentile) ÷ 100 × total candidates.

What percentile is needed for JEE Advanced?

Candidates must be in the top 2,50,000; NTA announces the qualifying percentile for each category every year.
