Step Up SIP Explained: 5% vs 10% Yearly Increase, in Numbers

By Umer SattarUpdated 23 Oct 20263 min read

Most salaried investors in Bengaluru, Pune or Gurugram start a SIP at a comfortable amount and then forget to raise it, even as their salary grows every year. A step up SIP fixes that by increasing the monthly amount automatically each year. The difference it makes over 15–20 years is larger than most people expect, and it depends far less on market luck than on habit.

How a step-up SIP works

The monthly instalment rises by a fixed percentage (or a fixed amount) every 12 months. ₹10,000 a month with a 10% step-up becomes ₹11,000 in year two, ₹12,100 in year three, and so on. Most mutual fund platforms call this a top-up SIP and let you choose it when starting the SIP.

Monthly rate r = (1 + yearly return)^(1/12) − 1
Each month: value = (value + instalment) × (1 + r)
Every 12 months: instalment × (1 + step-up %)

The numbers: ₹10,000 a month at an assumed 12% a year

Total invested and estimated value
YearsPlain SIP5% step-up10% step-up
10₹12.0 L → ₹22.4 L₹15.1 L → ₹26.9 L₹19.1 L → ₹32.7 L
15₹18.0 L → ₹47.6 L₹25.9 L → ₹61.9 L₹38.1 L → ₹82.7 L
20₹24.0 L → ₹92.0 L₹39.7 L → ₹1.28 Cr₹68.7 L → ₹1.86 Cr

Over 20 years, a 10% step-up roughly doubles the final value compared with a flat SIP. Much of that comes simply from investing more money, which is the point: the step-up keeps the SIP in line with income.

Is 12% a realistic return?

Nobody can promise any return. 12% is a common illustration for long-term equity, but actual returns vary and can be negative over short periods. Try lower rates too: with the same 10% step-up over 20 years, 10% a year gives about ₹1.55 crore and 8% about ₹1.29 crore.

How much should the step-up be?

  • Match it to your increment. If salary typically rises 8–10%, a 5–10% step-up keeps the SIP share of income roughly steady.
  • Start smaller if unsure. 5% is gentle and still adds a lot over long periods.
  • Cap it if needed. Some platforms allow a maximum SIP amount, after which the step-up stops.
  • Pause, don't cancel. In a tight year, reduce or skip the step-up rather than stopping the SIP.

Stock SIP vs mutual fund SIP

A step-up works the same way for a mutual fund SIP or a stock SIP (buying a fixed rupee amount of one share, such as Hindustan Unilever, every month). A single stock carries company-specific risk that a diversified fund spreads out, so many investors keep stock SIPs as a smaller part of their monthly investing.
