Families often hear an astrologer say “there is Raj Yoga in kundli” and leave without knowing what that actually means. Raj Yoga is not a single lucky planet. It is a relationship between the lords of particular houses, and once that idea is clear, anyone can check a printed birth chart with a pencil. This guide walks through the logic the way a patient jyotish teacher would.
Raj Yoga in kundli: the one idea behind it
A kundli has twelve houses counted from the Lagna (ascendant). Two groups of houses matter here:
- Kendras: houses 1, 4, 7 and 10. Teachers call them the pillars of life: self, home, partnership and work.
- Trikonas: houses 1, 5 and 9. These are the houses of merit, intelligence and fortune.
A Raj Yoga forms when the lord (ruling planet) of a kendra connects with the lord of a trikona. The connection can be a conjunction (both in the same sign), an exchange (each sitting in the other's sign) or a mutual aspect. That is the whole principle; the many named Raja Yogas in classical texts are variations of it.
Is the 1st house a kendra or a trikona?
Both. The Lagna is counted in both groups, which is why the Lagna lord joining a 5th or 9th lord, or a 4th, 7th or 10th lord, is considered meaningful.
Step 1: know which planet rules which sign
House lords come from the sign in each house. Every printed kundli shows sign numbers (1 = Mesha … 12 = Meena), so this table is all that is needed:
| Sign | Ruler | Sign | Ruler |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Mesha (Aries) | Mars | 7 Tula (Libra) | Venus |
| 2 Vrishabha (Taurus) | Venus | 8 Vrishchika (Scorpio) | Mars |
| 3 Mithuna (Gemini) | Mercury | 9 Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Jupiter |
| 4 Karka (Cancer) | Moon | 10 Makara (Capricorn) | Saturn |
| 5 Simha (Leo) | Sun | 11 Kumbha (Aquarius) | Saturn |
| 6 Kanya (Virgo) | Mercury | 12 Meena (Pisces) | Jupiter |
Rahu and Ketu do not rule signs in this classical scheme, so they are not counted as house lords here.

Step 2: a worked example with Mesha Lagna
Take a chart with Mesha (Aries) rising. Counting from the Lagna, the 4th house is Karka, the 5th Simha, the 7th Tula, the 9th Dhanu and the 10th Makara. So:
| House | Sign | Lord | Group |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | Mesha | Mars | Kendra and trikona |
| 4th | Karka | Moon | Kendra |
| 5th | Simha | Sun | Trikona |
| 7th | Tula | Venus | Kendra |
| 9th | Dhanu | Jupiter | Trikona |
| 10th | Makara | Saturn | Kendra |
Now look at where these planets actually sit. If the Moon (4th lord) and Jupiter (9th lord) are in the same sign, that is a kendra–trikona Raj Yoga. If Saturn (10th lord) and Jupiter (9th lord) are linked, it is the combination many teachers rate most highly, the Dharma–Karmadhipati Yoga, because the lord of fortune joins the lord of work.
Step 3: look for a Yogakaraka
For some Lagnas, one planet rules a kendra and a trikona by itself. Such a planet is called a Yogakaraka, and it can give Raj Yoga results on its own, especially during its dasha:
- Saturn for Vrishabha and Tula Lagna (it rules the 9th and 10th, or the 4th and 5th).
- Mars for Karka and Simha Lagna (the 5th and 10th, or the 4th and 9th).
- Venus for Makara and Kumbha Lagna (the 5th and 10th, or the 4th and 9th).
Strength and timing matter more than the label
Two charts can both “have Raj Yoga” and still look nothing alike in life. Experienced astrologers in Ujjain and Varanasi weigh three things before saying anything about results:
- Dignity: a planet exalted or in its own sign gives fuller results than one that is debilitated or combust (too close to the Sun).
- Affliction: a yoga pressed by malefics, or made in the 6th, 8th or 12th house, behaves differently.
- Dasha: results mostly appear in the major or sub-period of the planets forming the yoga. A strong yoga whose planets' dashas never come in a lifetime stays mostly on paper.
Does Raj Yoga mean a government job or political power?
Not literally. “Raja” describes status and recognition in whatever field a person is in. A teacher, trader or engineer can show a Raj Yoga through respect and responsibility in their own work.
Common myths about Raj Yoga
- “Everyone with Jupiter in a kendra has Raj Yoga.” That is Hamsa or Gaja-Kesari territory depending on the condition, not the kendra–trikona rule.
- “It can be read from the date of birth alone.” Houses depend on the Lagna, which changes about every two hours, so the birth time is essential.
- “Numerology number 1 or 9 means Raj Yoga.” Numerology is a separate tradition; Raj Yoga is formed only by planets and houses.
- “Raj Yoga guarantees success.” No chart guarantees anything. It describes potential that effort and circumstances shape.
Checking by hand is a good way to learn, but it is easy to miss exchanges and aspects. The free Raj Yoga calculator works out real planetary positions from the date, time and place of birth, tests every rule, and names the planets behind each yoga so the result can be matched with the family kundli.
Frequently asked questions
What is Raj Yoga in kundli?
A combination in which the lord of a kendra (houses 1, 4, 7, 10) connects with the lord of a trikona (houses 1, 5, 9) by conjunction, exchange or mutual aspect.
How can I check Raj Yoga in my kundli?
Find the Lagna, list the lords of houses 1, 4, 5, 7, 9 and 10 using the sign rulers, then see whether any kendra lord sits with, exchanges with or aspects a trikona lord.
Which Raj Yoga is considered the best?
Many teachers rate the Dharma–Karmadhipati Yoga, formed by the 9th and 10th lords, as the finest, because it links fortune with career.
What is a Yogakaraka planet?
A planet that rules both a kendra and a trikona for a given Lagna, such as Saturn for Vrishabha and Tula Lagna.
When does Raj Yoga give results?
Mainly during the dasha or antardasha of the planets that form it, and in proportion to their strength.
