First-year students at SRM's Kattankulathur campus quickly learn that their GPA is not decided on exam day alone. The SRM grading system turns final marks, built from internal assessment and the end-semester exam, into letter grades, and grades into points weighted by credits. Knowing where the band edges are helps students decide where effort pays most.
SRM grading system: marks bands and grade points
| Final marks | Grade | Points |
|---|---|---|
| 91–100 | O | 10 |
| 81–90 | A+ | 9 |
| 71–80 | A | 8 |
| 61–70 | B+ | 7 |
| 56–60 | B | 6 |
| 50–55 | C | 5 |
| Below 50 | F | 0 |
Notice the narrower bands at the bottom: B is only five marks wide and C six. Near the pass line, every mark matters.
Where internal marks come in
Final marks combine continuous assessment (cycle tests, assignments, lab work, quizzes) with the end-semester examination in proportions set for each course type. A student sitting at 79 after both parts is one mark from an A+. That is why seniors advise treating cycle tests seriously: they are the easiest marks to secure and often decide which band a course ends in.
Can a strong internal score save a weak end-semester exam?
It can lift the total, but courses usually also have a minimum requirement in the end-semester exam. Check the regulation for your course type, because a high internal score doesn't override that minimum.

Credits decide how much a grade matters
GPA = Σ (credits × grade points) ÷ Σ credits
In a semester of 4, 4, 3, 3 and 1.5 credits (15.5 total), moving one 4-credit course from A to A+ raises GPA by 4 ÷ 15.5 ≈ 0.26. The same jump in the 1.5-credit lab adds only about 0.10. Plan revision time around the high-credit courses.
CGPA and percentage
- CGPA = all credit points of all semesters ÷ all credits; don't average GPAs when credit totals differ.
- Percentage: CGPA × 10 is the conversion commonly used for SRM transcripts. If an employer needs a formal conversion, the examination office can issue a certificate.
Planning a semester with the grading system
At the start of each semester, list the courses by credits. For the two or three highest-credit courses, set a target band (for example A+) and work backwards: how many marks are needed from cycle tests and assignments to make the end-semester exam less risky. For low-credit labs, aim for steady work and complete records, which usually earn good grades with less pressure. Recalculate the expected GPA after each cycle test so there are no surprises on result day.
The SRM GPA calculator applies these grade points to each course's credits, combines the current semester with the CGPA so far, and shows the percentage.
Frequently asked questions
