Every placement season, students in Bengaluru, Pune and Kolkata hit the same wall: the job portal wants a percentage, but the marksheet shows SGPA or CGPA. The SGPA to percentage formula is not the same everywhere, and using the wrong one can put a candidate below a cut-off they actually cleared. This guide shows which rule applies, how to work it out, and what to write when a form gives no instructions.
SGPA, CGPA and percentage: three different things
- SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average): the credit-weighted average for one semester.
- CGPA (Cumulative GPA): the credit-weighted average of all semesters so far.
- Percentage: a converted figure, produced by a rule the university or board publishes.
Most conversions are officially defined for CGPA, the overall figure. Converting a single semester's SGPA with the same rule is common practice for internal forms, but for degree-level eligibility recruiters usually want the CGPA-based percentage.
Can SGPA be averaged to get CGPA?
Only if every semester carried the same credits. Otherwise CGPA = total credit points of all semesters ÷ total credits. Averaging SGPAs of unequal semesters gives a slightly wrong answer.
SGPA to percentage formula: the three rules in use
| Rule | Who uses it | Formula | 8.2 becomes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Multiply by 10 | Many UGC CBCS universities, Anna University, SRM | CGPA × 10 | 82% |
| Multiply by 9.5 | CBSE (school CGPA) | CGPA × 9.5 | 77.9% |
| Subtract 0.75, multiply by 10 | VTU (Karnataka) | (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 | 74.5% |
The difference between rules is large: the same 8.2 can be 82% or 74.5%. That is why the first job is always to find the rule printed on the marksheet, grade card or academic regulations.

Worked examples
1. A CBCS university using × 10
A BCom student in Kolkata has a CGPA of 7.46. If the university's rule is × 10, the percentage is 74.6%.
2. A VTU engineering student
CGPA 8.05 → (8.05 − 0.75) × 10 = 73.0%. Writing 80.5% on an application would overstate the result and can surface at background verification.
3. A CBSE Class 10 result in CGPA
Older CBSE results in CGPA used × 9.5, so a 9.2 CGPA corresponds to 87.4%.
Quick reference table
| CGPA | × 10 | × 9.5 | (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6.0 | 60.0% | 57.0% | 52.5% |
| 6.5 | 65.0% | 61.8% | 57.5% |
| 7.0 | 70.0% | 66.5% | 62.5% |
| 7.5 | 75.0% | 71.3% | 67.5% |
| 8.0 | 80.0% | 76.0% | 72.5% |
| 8.5 | 85.0% | 80.8% | 77.5% |
| 9.0 | 90.0% | 85.5% | 82.5% |
Where to find your university's rule
- The back of the grade card or consolidated marksheet: many universities print the conversion there.
- The academic regulations document for your scheme year, usually on the university website under Examinations.
- The examination section or the college exam cell, which can issue a conversion certificate if an employer needs one.
If a university has issued a percentage conversion certificate, use that figure everywhere. It is the only number an employer can verify directly.
What to write when a form gives no rule
Online forms often have one box labelled “Percentage”. A safe approach that placement officers recommend:
- Enter the percentage using your university's published rule.
- If the form allows, also mention the CGPA and scale, for example “CGPA 8.05/10 (73.0% as per VTU rule)”.
- Never round up across a cut-off. If the requirement is 60% and the conversion gives 59.6%, write 59.6%.
Can percentage be converted back to CGPA?
Yes, by reversing the same rule: ÷ 10, ÷ 9.5, or (percentage ÷ 10) + 0.75 for VTU. Use the rule of the institution that issued the result.
Common mistakes
- Using × 10 for every university. It overstates VTU results by 7.5 percentage points.
- Converting the latest SGPA instead of CGPA for degree eligibility.
- Ignoring failed or repeated subjects. Most universities count the cleared attempt in CGPA; check how your regulations treat arrears.
Frequently asked questions
What is the SGPA to percentage formula?
It depends on the university: CGPA × 10 for many CBCS universities, × 9.5 for CBSE, and (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 for VTU.
How do I convert 8 SGPA to percentage?
80% with the × 10 rule, 76% with CBSE's × 9.5, and 72.5% with VTU's (CGPA − 0.75) × 10.
Is SGPA × 9.5 correct for engineering colleges?
Usually not. × 9.5 is CBSE's school rule. Engineering universities publish their own rule; check your regulations.
Should I convert SGPA or CGPA for job applications?
CGPA, the overall figure, unless the form asks for a specific semester.
Where can I get an official percentage conversion?
From your university's examination section, which can issue a conversion certificate.
