One Page Resume: What to Cut, What to Keep, With Examples

By Umer SattarUpdated 23 Oct 20262 min read

HR teams in Pune and Gurugram describe the same habit: the first look at a resume is fast, often well under a minute. A one page resume forces the important things to the top and makes that first look count. Most freshers and early-career professionals don't need more. Here is how to get there without losing substance.

What recruiters scan first

  1. Name, role title and contact.
  2. The two-line summary.
  3. Current or latest role (or education and projects for freshers).
  4. Skills that match the job post.

Everything else is read only if these pass.

What to cut from a one page resume

  • Father's name, full address, date of birth, marital status (keep them for biodatas).
  • “Objective” lines that say nothing (“to work in a challenging environment”).
  • School-level details beyond Class 10 and 12 marks.
  • Hobbies unless they relate to the job.
  • Old, unrelated jobs from many years ago: one line each, or remove.
  • References: “available on request” is assumed.

Should I cut the declaration?

For MNCs and startups, yes. Many Indian employers, government bodies and banks still expect it; keep it for them.

Layout tricks that save space

  • One line for contact details, separated by bullets.
  • Skills as a comma-separated list, not one per line.
  • Education as a compact table.
  • Margins around 12–15 mm and a 10–11 pt body font.

When two pages are fine

With roughly 8–10 years of relevant experience, several significant roles, or technical projects that matter for the job, a second page is acceptable, as long as page one carries the strongest material.

A one page resume checklist

  • Name, title and contact fit in two lines.
  • Summary is two lines, specific to the role.
  • Every bullet starts with an action verb; at least half have a number.
  • Skills match the job post's wording where true.
  • No spelling mistakes; dates in one consistent format.
  • Saved as a PDF named FirstName-LastName-Resume.pdf.

The resume builder shows a live A4 preview, so you can see the moment a resume spills to a second page, and offers compact templates, ready summaries, skill chips and custom sections. Download as PDF or Word.
