Plenty of people grow up reading a Sun-sign horoscope in the newspaper, then hear from a family pandit that their rashi is something else entirely. Both can be correct. Moon sign vs Sun sign is a difference of what is being measured and which zodiac is used. This guide explains it simply.
Two differences, not one
- Which body: Western horoscopes use the Sun's sign at birth. Indian astrology gives most weight to the Moon's sign (rashi), which describes the mind and daily temperament.
- Which zodiac: Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac tied to the seasons. Indian astrology uses the sidereal zodiac tied to the stars, which today sits about 24° behind the tropical one (the ayanamsa).
Is my Sun sign different in Indian astrology too?
Often, yes. Because of the roughly 24° difference, the Sun is in the previous sign for most of each month. Someone who is a tropical Leo born in early August usually has the Sun in Karka (Cancer) in the sidereal chart.
Why the Moon sign changes so fast
The Sun spends about a month in each sign, so Sun signs follow the calendar. The Moon moves through a sign in about two and a half days. Two people born a day apart can have different rashis, and a birth near a sign change needs the exact time to be sure.

Nakshatra: the finer division
Each sign is further divided into nakshatras (27 around the zodiac, each 13°20′) and each nakshatra into four padas. The Moon's nakshatra and pada are used for:
- The traditional first letter of a baby's name.
- Guna Milan in kundli matching.
- The starting point of the Vimshottari dasha.
Which one should I use?
| Purpose | Use |
|---|---|
| Indian rashifal, naming, matching | Moon sign (sidereal) and nakshatra |
| Kundli houses | Lagna (rising sign), which needs the birth time |
| Western horoscope columns | Sun sign (tropical) |
A worked example
Consider someone born on 5 August. In the tropical zodiac the Sun is in Leo, so magazines call them a Leo. In the sidereal zodiac, about 24° behind, the Sun is still in Karka (Cancer). Their Moon could be anywhere: if the Moon that day was in sidereal Vrishabha (Taurus), the kundli calls them a Vrishabha rashi, and their naming syllable and Guna Milan come from the Moon's nakshatra there. Three different “signs” for one person, each correct within its own system.
