Second-year students in Bengaluru and Kolkata often ask the same thing after results: “My SGPA went up a lot, so why did my CGPA barely move?” SGPA vs CGPA is the difference between one semester and the whole programme, and credits decide how they combine. A four-semester example makes it clear.
SGPA vs CGPA: the two definitions
SGPA = Σ(credits × grade points) ÷ Σ credits (one semester) CGPA = Σ(credit points of all semesters) ÷ Σ(all credits)
CGPA weighs each semester by its credits. It is not the plain average of SGPAs unless every semester carried exactly the same credits.
A four-semester example

CGPA = (144 + 171.6 + 204 + 162) ÷ (20 + 22 + 24 + 18) = 681.6 ÷ 84 = 8.11 Simple average of SGPAs = (7.2 + 7.8 + 8.5 + 9.0) ÷ 4 = 8.13
Here the difference is small, but with very unequal credits it can be larger, enough to matter near a cut-off.
Why did a 9.0 SGPA move my CGPA so little?
Because it is averaged with everything before it. In the example, a 9.0 over 18 credits lifted CGPA from 7.87 (after three semesters: 519.6 ÷ 66) to 8.11. The more credits behind you, the slower CGPA moves.

How hard is it to raise CGPA late?
To lift a CGPA of 7.5 over 120 credits to 8.0 by adding 40 more credits, the new semesters would need an average of:
Target points = 8.0 × 160 = 1,280 Already earned = 7.5 × 120 = 900 Needed in 40 credits = 380 ÷ 40 = 9.5 SGPA
That is why teachers keep stressing the first semesters: early grades carry through the whole degree.
Which one to write on forms
- Job and higher-study applications: CGPA (the overall figure), unless a form asks for a semester.
- Scholarship renewals: often the latest SGPA or annual GPA; read the scheme rules.
- Percentage: convert using your university's published rule, not a generic one.
