In many families, the first conversation about a rishta is not about the boy or girl at all; it is about a number. “Kitne gun mile?” Guna Milan reduces two horoscopes to a score out of 36, and that number can open or close a door. Understanding where the points come from helps families use the score sensibly instead of fearing it.
Why only the Moon is compared
Guna Milan compares the two Moon nakshatras and Moon signs, because the Moon represents the mind, emotions and daily temperament. It does not look at the Lagna or the rest of the chart. That is both its strength (it can be done from the date and place of birth) and its limit (it says nothing about each person's own chart).
The eight kootas, one by one
Varna (1 point)
Each Moon sign belongs to a varna group: water signs, fire signs, earth signs and air signs are ranked in four groups. The point is given when the groom's group is equal to or higher than the bride's. It is the smallest koota and is read as broad temperament.
Vashya (2 points)
Signs are grouped by nature (human, quadruped, water-dwelling, wild, insect). Points reflect how naturally the two influence and accept each other.
Tara (3 points)
Count nakshatras from one partner's star to the other's and divide by nine. Certain remainders are considered unfavourable (traditionally 3, 5 and 7). It is done both ways, and is linked with fortune and wellbeing.
Yoni (4 points)
Each nakshatra is assigned one of fourteen animal yonis. Same or friendly yonis score high; naturally hostile pairs score zero. It is read as physical and instinctive compatibility.
Graha Maitri (5 points)
Compares the lords of the two Moon signs: friends score full, neutral less, enemies little or nothing. Teachers rate it highly as an indicator of mental friendship.
Gana (6 points)
Nakshatras are Deva (gentle), Manushya (human) or Rakshasa (intense). Same gana scores full; Deva with Rakshasa scores lowest.
Bhakoot (7 points)
Looks at how far apart the Moon signs are. Positions 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8 from each other score zero, which is called Bhakoot dosha.
Nadi (8 points)
Every nakshatra is Aadi, Madhya or Antya nadi. Same nadi scores zero (Nadi dosha), different nadis score eight. It is the heaviest koota and is linked with health and children.

Reading the Guna Milan total sensibly
| Total | Reading |
|---|---|
| Below 18 | Usually not recommended without further study |
| 18–24 | Acceptable |
| 25–32 | Good |
| 33–36 | Excellent |
Experienced astrologers don't stop at the total. A 20 with no doshas is often preferred to a 27 with Nadi dosha, because the heavy kootas tell more than the sum. They also check Mangal dosha (which needs the birth time) and each person's chart on its own.
Can doshas be cancelled?
Classical texts list exceptions. For example, Nadi dosha is often considered cancelled when both share the same Moon sign but different nakshatras, and Bhakoot dosha when the two sign lords are the same or friends. Astrologers differ on which exceptions they accept.
North and South Indian matching
The 36-point Ashtakoota is the North Indian method. In Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka, families usually use Dasha Porutham (ten poruthams), which weighs factors differently. The same couple can look different under each system; neither is “wrong”.
A score is a tradition many families value, not a verdict on two people. Health, values, communication and families' mutual respect deserve at least as much attention.
Frequently asked questions
How is Guna Milan calculated?
By comparing the two Moon nakshatras and signs across eight kootas (Varna 1, Vashya 2, Tara 3, Yoni 4, Graha Maitri 5, Gana 6, Bhakoot 7, Nadi 8), totalling 36.
How many gunas should match for marriage?
18 is the traditional minimum; 25 or more is considered good. Doshas are judged separately.
What is Nadi dosha in Guna Milan?
When both partners' Moon nakshatras are in the same nadi, scoring 0 of 8 points.
Is Guna Milan possible without birth time?
Usually yes, from the date and place, because it uses the Moon's nakshatra. The birth time is needed near nakshatra boundaries and for Mangal dosha.
Is a high Guna Milan score enough?
No. Astrologers also check Nadi and Bhakoot dosha, Mangal dosha and both charts individually.
