CBSE CGPA to Percentage: Why 9.5, and How to Use It Today

By Umer SattarUpdated 23 Oct 20262 min read

Millions of people who finished Class 10 under CBSE's grading years still carry a marksheet with a CGPA instead of marks, and every job or admission form asks for a percentage. The CBSE CGPA to percentage rule is simple, CGPA × 9.5, but the reason behind it and the right way to apply it are less known. This guide covers both.

CBSE CGPA to percentage: the rule

Overall indicative percentage = CGPA × 9.5
Subject-wise indicative percentage = Grade point × 9.5

A CGPA of 8.4 gives 8.4 × 9.5 = 79.8%. A perfect 10 gives 95%, not 100%.

Why 9.5?

Under the CCE grading scheme used for Class 10, CBSE found that the average marks of students who earned the top grade (A1, 10 grade points) across subjects worked out to about 95. Dividing by ten grade points gave a factor of 9.5. So the multiplier reflects the actual marks behind the grades, which is why a 10 CGPA translates to 95% rather than a perfect score.

Does CBSE still give CGPA?

Class 10 results under the CCE grading scheme showed CGPA; CBSE has since gone back to marks-based results. The 9.5 rule is still needed for older marksheets that show only grades.

Subject-wise percentage

Some forms ask for marks in a particular subject, such as Mathematics or English. Multiply that subject's grade point by 9.5: an A2 (9 points) in Mathematics converts to an indicative 85.5% in that subject.

What to write on forms

  • Write the CGPA and the converted figure together, for example “CGPA 8.4 (79.8% as per CBSE × 9.5)”.
  • Do not round up across a cut-off. If eligibility is 80% and the conversion gives 79.8%, write 79.8%.
  • Use the rule printed on the marksheet. CBSE marksheets of that period carry the conversion note.
  • Don't apply × 9.5 to university CGPAs. Colleges and universities have their own rules (× 10, VTU's formula and others).

For the reverse (percentage to CBSE CGPA), divide by 9.5: 85% ÷ 9.5 = 8.95. The percentage to CGPA calculator does both directions and other universities' rules too.
