IGNOU learners in small towns often study alone, and the grade card can be confusing: two columns of marks, a status, and no percentage anywhere. IGNOU percentage calculation is simple once the 30/70 rule and the separate pass marks are clear. This guide walks through a sample grade card line by line, the way study-centre counsellors explain it at induction meetings.
The rule: 30% assignment, 70% exam
Course final marks = 0.30 × Assignment + 0.70 × Term-End Exam (both marks out of 100)
Each theory course has two parts: the assignment (continuous assessment) and the Term-End Examination (TEE). Both are marked out of 100 and then weighted. Practical, lab and project courses follow their own weightage, given in each programme guide.
Reading a grade card
Here is how three lines of a typical BA grade card might look, and what they mean:
| Course | Assignment | TEE | Final marks | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BHDC-111 | 82 | 64 | 0.3×82 + 0.7×64 = 69.4 | Completed |
| BEGC-101 | 76 | 48 | 22.8 + 33.6 = 56.4 | Completed |
| BPSC-101 | 90 | 30 | 27 + 21 = 48.0 | Not completed |
The third line surprises many learners: the final marks look like a pass, but the TEE score of 30 is below the 35% pass mark, so the course is not completed. Each part must be passed separately.
What is the pass mark in each part?
Usually 35% for bachelor's degrees and diplomas and 40% for master's programmes, in the assignment and in the TEE separately. The programme guide states the exact rule for each programme.

From course marks to an overall percentage
- Work out final marks for every completed course using the 30/70 rule.
- If all courses have the same credits, take the simple average.
- If credits differ (common in CBCS programmes), use a credit-weighted average: Σ(final marks × credits) ÷ Σ credits.
Example with credits: courses of 6, 6 and 4 credits with 69.4, 56.4 and 72.0 give (416.4 + 338.4 + 288) ÷ 16 = 65.2%. A simple average would say 65.9%, slightly different.
Grades IGNOU prints
| Grade | Range |
|---|---|
| A | 80% and above |
| B | 60 to 79.9% |
| C | 50 to 59.9% |
| D | Pass mark to 49.9% |
| E | Not completed |
Common errors in IGNOU percentage calculation
- Averaging assignment and TEE equally. They are weighted 30/70, not 50/50.
- Counting a “Not completed” course. Leave it out until the TEE is cleared and the grade card updates.
- Forgetting re-appear updates. After a re-attempt, the grade card shows the new TEE mark; recalculate with it.
- Missing assignment marks. Assignments submitted late or not uploaded show as blank; the course stays incomplete until they are entered.
Before applying for a job or a higher course, check that every course shows “Completed”. Many applications ask for the final result or a provisional certificate, not a self-calculated percentage.
Where the figure is used
Employers and universities generally want the overall percentage for eligibility (for example “50% in graduation”). If IGNOU's final marksheet states a division or percentage, that official figure is what should go on forms. The self-calculated figure is for planning: knowing early whether a weak TEE needs a re-attempt to cross a cut-off.
Frequently asked questions
How is IGNOU percentage calculated?
For each course: 30% of the assignment marks plus 70% of the term-end exam marks. The overall percentage is the average (or credit-weighted average) of all completed courses.
What is the pass mark in IGNOU?
Usually 35% in each of the assignment and the TEE for bachelor's programmes, and 40% for master's.
Why does my course show “Not completed” with good marks?
One of the two parts (usually the TEE or a missing assignment) is below the pass mark, even if the weighted total looks fine.
Does IGNOU use credit-weighted percentage?
Many CBCS programmes do. Multiply each course's final marks by its credits, add them, and divide by total credits.
Which percentage should I write on job forms?
The one on IGNOU's final marksheet or provisional certificate, if it states one.
