MS Pipe Weight Calculator: Weight in kg per Metre
This MS pipe weight calculator gives the weight of mild steel pipe in kg per metre, per 6 m length and for a whole order. Pick an IS 1239 size (light, medium or heavy class) or type any outside diameter and wall thickness. It also works for GI, stainless steel, aluminium and copper pipe, and the MS pipe weight chart below lists the common sizes.

MS pipe weight formula in kg
Steel pipe is sold by weight, so fabricators in Mandi Gobindgarh, Raipur or Faridabad check every invoice against this formula. The pipe wall is a thin ring; its cross-section area times the density of steel gives the weight per metre:
Weight (kg/m) = π × (OD − t) × t × density ÷ 1,000,000 For mild steel (7,850 kg/m³): Weight (kg/m) = (OD − t) × t × 0.02466 OD and t in mm
Example: 25 NB (1 inch) medium class pipe has OD 33.7 mm and a 3.2 mm wall. (33.7 − 3.2) × 3.2 × 0.02466 = 2.41 kg/m, so one 6 m length weighs about 14.5 kg.
Why does the formula use OD minus thickness?
(OD − t) is the mean diameter of the wall. Multiplying it by π gives the mid-line circumference, and multiplying by t gives the ring's area, which is exact for a round tube.

| 100 NB (4") | 114.3 | 9.83 | 12.2 | 14.5 |
Light class is common for structural railings and furniture, medium for water lines and general plumbing, and heavy for high-pressure and industrial use. Medium and heavy pipes in IS 1239 are colour-coded blue and red bands respectively, and light pipes yellow, which helps when checking stock at the dealer.
Galvanised (GI) pipe is a little heavier than black MS pipe of the same size because of the zinc coating, typically 3–5% more. Dealers usually quote GI by the same IS 1239 weights plus the coating.
What is a Schedule 40 pipe?
Schedule 40 (often searched as “40 weight pipe”) is an American wall-thickness series from ASME B36.10, common in oil, gas and imported fittings. A 1-inch Sch 40 pipe has an OD of 33.4 mm and a 3.38 mm wall, about 2.50 kg/m, close to IS 1239 medium class. Choose “Custom OD × thickness” to calculate any schedule.
MS pipe weight calculator in Excel
Put OD (mm) in A2, thickness (mm) in B2 and length (m) in C2. Then =(A2-B2)*B2*0.02466*C2 gives the weight in kg. This works as a quick MS pipe weight calculator in Excel for whole purchase lists.
How to use the pipe weight per metre calculator
- Choose IS 1239 size and class, or switch to a custom OD and thickness.
- Pick the material: mild steel/GI, stainless steel, aluminium or copper.
- Enter the length of each pipe (6 m is standard in India) and the number of pipes.
- Read kg per metre, per pipe and in total, plus per-foot values for imported specifications.

MS Pipe Weight Calculator: questions people ask
How is MS pipe weight calculated in kg per metre?
Weight (kg/m) = (OD − thickness) × thickness × 0.02466, with OD and thickness in millimetres. This uses the density of mild steel, 7,850 kg/m³.
What is the weight of a 1 inch MS pipe per metre?
A 25 NB (1 inch) IS 1239 pipe weighs about 1.99 kg/m in light class, 2.41 kg/m in medium and 2.93 kg/m in heavy.
What is the weight of a 1½ inch MS pipe per metre?
A 40 NB (1½ inch) pipe weighs about 3.25 kg/m (light), 3.56 kg/m (medium) or 4.37 kg/m (heavy).
What is a Schedule 40 (Sch 40) pipe?
A wall-thickness series from the American standard ASME B36.10. A 1-inch Sch 40 pipe is 33.4 mm OD with a 3.38 mm wall, about 2.50 kg/m.
How do I use the MS pipe weight formula in Excel?
Use =(OD-t)*t*0.02466*Length with OD and t in mm and length in metres to get kilograms.
Is GI pipe heavier than MS pipe?
Slightly. The zinc coating adds roughly 3–5% to the weight of the same IS 1239 size.
