How kundali matching works
In much of North India, from Lucknow to Jaipur, a match is first “checked on the patrika”: the two horoscopes go to the family pandit, who counts the gunas before the families even meet. Kundali guna milan compares the two Moons, because the Moon stands for the mind and emotions, and scores eight factors called kootas. Together they add up to 36 points.

Is 18 gunas enough for marriage?
Traditionally 18 is the minimum. But a seasoned astrologer never stops at the total. Nadi and Bhakoot dosha, Mangal dosha and the strength of each chart are checked separately, and a 20 with no doshas is often preferred over a 26 with Nadi dosha.
Nadi, Bhakoot and Mangal dosha
- Nadi dosha: both Moons fall in the same nadi (Aadi, Madhya or Antya), scoring 0 of 8. It is taken seriously because it concerns health and children. Classical texts mention exceptions, such as the same Moon sign with different nakshatras.
- Bhakoot dosha: the Moon signs are 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 from each other, scoring 0 of 7. Many astrologers cancel it when the two sign lords are friends or the same planet.
- Mangal dosha: Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the Lagna. It needs the birth time. The common rule is that it cancels when both partners have it, or when Mars is in its own or exalted sign.
South Indian families often use the Dasha Porutham (ten poruthams) system instead of the North Indian 36-guna method, so a Tamil or Kerala astrologer's verdict may read differently for the same couple. Both are traditional; they just weigh factors differently.
