JEE Mains marking scheme and score formula
Paper 1 (BE/BTech) has 75 questions, 25 in each subject. Each correct answer earns +4 and each wrong answer costs −1, for both multiple-choice and numerical questions under the current pattern. Unattempted questions score zero.
Score (out of 300) = 4 × correct − 1 × wrong Percentile = 100 × (candidates in your session scoring ≤ you) ÷ (candidates in your session)
How is JEE Mains score different from percentile?
The score is your raw marks out of 300. The percentile compares you with everyone in your session: 98 percentile means 98% of candidates scored the same as or less than you. Because papers differ in difficulty, NTA uses percentiles, not marks, to rank across shifts.
From percentile to rank
Approximate rank = (100 − percentile) ÷ 100 × total candidates
With about 13 lakh candidates, a 96.5 percentile places someone around rank 45,500, and 99 percentile around 13,000. NTA's final All India Rank uses the better of the two sessions' percentiles, so an improved session 2 can lift the rank. The calculator uses whatever candidate count is entered, so it stays useful as numbers change year to year.
Teachers in Kota usually advise students not to chase a “marks vs percentile” table from social media: the same marks can mean very different percentiles in an easy and a tough shift. Wait for NTA's percentile and use the rank formula.
JEE Advanced eligibility
To sit JEE Advanced, a candidate must be among the top 2,50,000 in JEE Main (across all categories, with category-wise shares). The calculator flags whether the estimated rank is inside that number. The actual qualifying percentile for each category is announced with the results.
