SGPA Calculator: SGPA, CGPA and Percentage in One Place

This SGPA calculator works out Semester Grade Point Average from each subject's credits and grade, adds earlier semesters to give CGPA, and converts the result to percentage using the rule the university actually publishes (× 10, CBSE's × 9.5, or VTU's formula). It follows the UGC Choice Based Credit System used by most Indian universities.

SGPA calculator formula, explained simply

Teachers in Bengaluru, Kochi and Kolkata explain SGPA to first-year students the same way: every subject has credits (how much it weighs) and every grade has points (how well you did). Multiply them, add them up, divide by the total credits.

SGPA = Σ (credits × grade points) ÷ Σ credits
CGPA = Σ (all semesters' credit points) ÷ Σ (all credits)

Example: five subjects with 4, 4, 3, 3 and 2 credits and grades of 9, 8, 10, 7 and 9 give (36 + 32 + 30 + 21 + 18) ÷ 16 = 8.56 SGPA. A 4-credit subject moves the SGPA twice as much as a 2-credit one, which is why lab and elective credits matter.

Is SGPA the same as CGPA?

No. SGPA covers one semester. CGPA is the credit-weighted average of all semesters so far, so it changes more slowly. Enter the earlier CGPA and its total credits in the calculator to see the new CGPA.

SGPA calculator to percentage

There is no single national formula. Each university or board publishes its own rule, and forms for jobs or higher study usually ask which one was used:

SGPA/CGPA to percentage rules
University / boardRule8.0 equals
Most CBCS universities, Anna University, SRMCGPA × 1080%
CBSECGPA × 9.576%
VTU (Karnataka)(CGPA − 0.75) × 1072.5%

Always use the rule printed on the marksheet or in the university's regulations. If a university isn't listed, its examination section or academic regulations document will state the formula.

SGPA calculator for VTU, KTU and CU students

  • VTU (Belagavi): grades S, A, B… map to 10, 9, 8…, and percentage is (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. Choose the VTU rule in the calculator.
  • KTU (Kerala) and CU (Calcutta University): both use credit-weighted SGPA in the same way; for percentage, follow the conversion given in the latest academic regulations of each university.
  • Anna University and SRM: use their dedicated calculators, Anna University GPA and SRM GPA, which load the exact grade scales.

Marks to SGPA

If a result shows marks instead of grades, convert each subject's marks to its grade band first (for example 91–100 = O, 81–90 = A+ in many universities), then enter the grades here. The bands differ slightly by university, which is why this marks to SGPA calculator asks for grades rather than guessing.

How to use the SGPA calculator

  1. Choose the grading system: UGC 10-point is right for most universities.
  2. Enter each subject's credits and grade. Add or remove rows as needed.
  3. Optional: add the earlier CGPA and earlier credits to get the updated CGPA.
  4. Pick the percentage rule your university uses and read SGPA, CGPA and percentage together.
FAQ

SGPA Calculator: questions people ask

How do I calculate SGPA?

Multiply each subject's credits by its grade point, add the results, and divide by the total credits of the semester.

How do I convert SGPA to percentage?

Use your university's rule: × 10 for most CBCS universities, × 9.5 for CBSE, and (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 for VTU.

How do I convert SGPA to CGPA?

CGPA = total credit points of all semesters ÷ total credits of all semesters. It is not a simple average of SGPAs when semesters have different credits.

What is the SGPA calculator formula for VTU?

SGPA = Σ(credits × grade points) ÷ Σ credits, and percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10.

Can I use this as a marks to SGPA calculator?

Yes: convert each subject's marks to a grade using your university's marks bands, then enter the grades and credits.

What is a good SGPA?

Above 8 is generally considered very good, 7–8 good, and 6–7 average, though placement and admission cut-offs vary.
