Academic Calculators: SGPA, CGPA, Cut Off & Attendance
These academic calculators answer the questions Indian students ask every semester and admission season: what is my SGPA, what percentage is my CGPA, what is my 12th cut off, how many classes can I miss and still keep 75% attendance, and what do my JEE or CAT marks mean. Each tool follows the official rule of the university or exam it is named after.

How SGPA and CGPA are calculated
Under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) that most Indian universities follow, every subject carries credits and every grade carries points (usually O = 10, A+ = 9, A = 8 and so on). Your SGPA is the credit-weighted average for one semester; your CGPA is the same average across all semesters so far.
SGPA = Σ (credits × grade points) ÷ Σ credits (one semester) CGPA = Σ (credits × grade points) ÷ Σ credits (all semesters)
Example: subjects of 4, 4, 3 and 3 credits with grades of 9, 8, 10 and 7 give (36 + 32 + 30 + 21) ÷ 14 = 8.5 SGPA. A 4-credit subject moves your SGPA more than a 2-credit one, so plan your effort around credits.
SGPA or CGPA to percentage: there is no single formula
This is the most misunderstood conversion in Indian education. Each university publishes its own rule, and employers and colleges abroad usually want the one printed on your marksheet or transcript:
| Board / university | Rule | 8.0 CGPA = |
|---|---|---|
| CBSE (Class 10 CGPA) | CGPA × 9.5 | 76% |
| Anna University | CGPA × 10 | 80% |
| VTU (Karnataka) | (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 | 72.5% |
| Most others | As printed on your marksheet or the university's notification | Varies |
Why does my friend's SGPA convert differently from mine?
Because the formula belongs to the university, not to SGPA itself. Always use the rule your own university prints, and say which rule you used when you fill a form.
Cut-off marks for admissions
In Tamil Nadu, the TNEA engineering cut-off is out of 200: Maths (out of 100) + Physics ÷ 2 + Chemistry ÷ 2, using 12th marks scaled to 100 each. Agriculture and some arts & science courses use their own subject combinations, while medical admission now runs on NEET scores. Other states and universities publish cut-offs differently, so our 12th cut off and cut off calculators let you pick the scheme.
IGNOU marks
IGNOU weights assignments at 30% and the term-end examination (TEE) at 70%. You need to pass both parts separately: usually 35% in each for bachelor's programmes and 40% in each for master's programmes, though some programmes set their own minimum, so check your programme guide. The IGNOU percentage calculator applies the weights and shows whether each part clears its minimum.
The 75% attendance rule
Most Indian universities and boards require 75% attendance to sit end-semester exams, with condonation for medical reasons at the college's discretion. The attendance calculator tells you how many classes you can still miss, or how many in a row you must attend to get back to 75%.
Classes needed to reach 75% = ⌈ (0.75 × total − attended) ÷ 0.25 ⌉ Classes you can skip = ⌊ (attended − 0.75 × total) ÷ 0.75 ⌋
Exam scores and percentiles
JEE Main gives a percentile, not a percentage: the share of candidates in your session who scored the same as or less than you. CAT percentiles work the same way on scaled scores. Our JEE Main and CAT calculators turn your marks into an estimate using the published method; the official percentile always comes from NTA or the IIMs.
Calculators help you plan; your university's or exam body's official result is final. When a rule changes (new regulation, new admission year), check the latest notification first.
Academic calculators: FAQ
How do I calculate SGPA from credits?
Multiply each subject's credits by its grade point, add the results, and divide by the total credits for the semester.
What is the formula to convert CGPA to percentage?
It depends on your board or university: CBSE uses CGPA × 9.5, Anna University CGPA × 10, and VTU (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. Use the rule printed on your own marksheet.
How is the IGNOU percentage calculated?
Final marks = 30% of the assignment marks + 70% of the term-end exam marks. Both parts must clear their own pass mark.
How is the TNEA engineering cut-off calculated?
Cut-off (out of 200) = Maths + Physics ÷ 2 + Chemistry ÷ 2, using 12th marks out of 100 each.
How many classes can I miss and keep 75% attendance?
Classes you can skip = (attended − 0.75 × total) ÷ 0.75, rounded down. The attendance calculator does this and also counts future classes.
Is the JEE Main percentile the same as percentage?
No. Percentile is the share of candidates who scored the same or lower than you; percentage is your own marks out of the maximum.
